For Discourse forums
Your forum gets
a voice.
Forums live on writing – but not every question wants to become a topic. With the Speeeak widget, members speak to you directly: feedback, a moderation concern, an idea. The setup is one script line in a theme component you create yourself.

Why a voice widget in your forum
Some things shouldn’t be discussed in public: feedback to the team, a note about a post, a question someone doesn’t dare to write. The widget takes it privately.
Discourse is built to be extended through theme components. One component with one line in the head – that’s all the widget needs, and it survives updates.
You need no server access and no plugin. Theme components are created in the admin area – on hosted forums too.
How to add it
- Create a widget and copy the key. In your Speeeak account under “Widgets”, create a widget – heading, fields, consent text, colour – and copy the script line with your key. For a forum the floating pill (
data-art="knopf") or the edge tab (data-art="lasche") usually fits best. - Create a theme component. Admin → Customize → Themes → Install → Create new, type “Theme component”, give it a name. Open the new component, choose Edit code and paste the line into the Head tab, save. Then add the component to your active theme. Themes installed from Git and the bundled core themes can’t be edited directly – which is exactly why your own component is the right way.
- Allow your domain. In Speeeak, add your forum’s address under “Allowed websites”. Then reload the forum and record a test message yourself.
Tip: Since Discourse 3.3 the Content Security Policy uses “strict-dynamic” – external scripts from theme components run without further settings. On older versions, also add
https://speeeak.io/js/widget.jsto thecontent security policy script srcsetting, otherwise the forum blocks the line.
Use this template
Texts, fields, colour and display style are prepared – adjust name and colour, copy one line of code into your website, done.
Take the template into my account Step-by-step setup
Free account: 1 widget with Speeeak link. Pro: 5 widgets, Speeeak link can be switched off.
What you do with it
- Feedback to the moderators: “Tell us what bothers you about the forum” – privately, without a public meta thread.
- Introductions for newcomers: whoever doesn’t dare to write a first post speaks for 30 seconds. You reply by voice.
- Listener mail for community podcasts: let members speak questions for the next episode, with a transcript from Plus.
- Privacy: consent text and your forum’s privacy link in the widget, delete link for the sender, servers in the EU, data processing agreement in one click.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need server access?
No. A theme component is created in the admin area. That works the same on self-hosted and hosted forums.
Does it survive a Discourse update?
Yes. The component is separate from your theme and stays in place across updates. You can switch it off at any time without touching anything else.
Can only logged-in members record?
The widget itself doesn’t check logins. Through the widget’s fields you can make name or e-mail required. If it should only be visible to members, add a condition to the component – that’s one more line.
What does it cost?
The free account includes one widget for one website with Speeeak link and 30 messages per month. Pro (€19/month) has five widgets, 300 messages and transcription.
